This advanced training for administrative personnel working in health care institutions is designed to cover the essential knowledge and practical skills required for non-clinical assistants working at reception offices.
The Certificate in Health Service Administration training consists of self study and face to face workshops. The comprehensive course support, the Distance Learning Pack describes the evolution of the National Health Service and Primary Care. The taught part of this training consists of five compulsory scheduled courses, consisting of interactive workshops.
During the 6 month training period, the key role of the receptionist in a Primary Care team is explored. Contact with the patient is described including face-to-face, telephone and written. Patient rights, health and safety, confidentiality and information governance are prominent topics on our training agenda. The evolving NHS is explored both in the pack and at one of the study days.
Suitability - Who should attend?
This training series awarding the Certificate in Health Service Administration is beneficial to non-clinical receptionists and administrative personnel working in institutions of primary care. All students must be registered with AMSPAR - the Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
This training series is approved by AMSPAR (Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators & Receptionists). The final assessment of the 6 month training consists of a 2,500 word work-based essay.
Upon completion of the self-study and scheduled training, participants are presented with the Certificate in Health Service and Administration.

The training series awarding the Certificate in Health Service Administration includes the following modules:
- Understanding Primary Care
- The Role of the Receptionist
- Looking after the patient
- Health & Safety
- Development of the Receptionist
Participants will be able to:
- Understand the structure of the NHS and people's roles within it
- Be aware of patients' rights to treatment and confidentiality
- Contribute to the maintenance of Health & Safety in the workplace
- Use a variety of methods to communicate with patients and colleagues
- Make good use of practice record keeping
- Reflect on and evaluate own level of competence.
The cost of this training course is £600 (incl. VAT), which covers learning materials, tutor support and registration fee where applicable. Funding is available for registred healthcare practitioners working in Yorkshire & the Humber.
